Evergreen Cemetery Partners with Davey for Landscape Care

Posted: July 8, 2016

Kent, Ohio – The oldest operating cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida, has partnered with North America’s oldest tree care company to protect and preserve its grounds.

Evergreen Cemetery has partnered with The Davey Tree Expert Company—both were founded in 1880—for full-service tree and landscape care at the cemetery’s 167-acre property, which is the final resting place to numerous notable Floridians.

Michael Ondina, general manager of Evergreen Cemetery, said the agreement with Davey, effective July 1, marks the first time in the cemetery’s history it is outsourcing care of the overall landscape.

“Our goal is to be the finest cemetery in the state of Florida and to be nationally recognized,” Ondina said. “Davey can help us get there.”

As one of Florida’s oldest operating cemeteries, Evergreen is home to several figures with historic significance to the state. Those laid to rest there include: Isaiah D. Hart, who founded Jacksonville, Florida, in 1822; Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, 19th governor of Florida; and Cora Crane, wife of American novelist, poet and journalist Stephen Crane. The memorials of more than 80,000 interred at Evergreen are decorated and shaded by hundreds of flowering trees and shrubs that make up its impressive tree canopy.

Davey provides comprehensive maintenance for cemeteries, which includes complete grounds maintenance, tree and shrub fertilization, pruning and removal, tree risk assessment, insect and disease management and emergency storm response. In addition, Davey provides a wealth of natural resource consulting services to aid in long-term planning efforts, including full tree inventories, tree protection during construction and ecological restoration.

Don Winsett, vice president, Davey’s National Business Development Team, said the partnership broadens Evergreen’s connections within the green and funeral industries.

“Davey works with a number of large, historic memorial parks across the country,” Winsett said. “Those relationships, combined with Davey’s sizeable presence in the green industry, creates synergies for Evergreen that will keep them on the cutting edge of landscape care.”

The Davey Tree Expert Company’s more than 8,600 employees provide tree care, grounds maintenance and environmental consulting services for the residential, utility, commercial and government markets throughout the U.S. and Canada. Davey has provided Proven Solutions for a Growing World since 1880 and has been employee-owned for 37 years. For more information, visit www.davey.com.
