In this Knoxville Daily Sun article, Rachel Broskey from Davey's Knoxville office talks about how extreme heat has affected tree health and how to help them get better.

A tall tree with a large canopy standing over a field with sun shining down and through its branches.Knoxville has just come through a stretch of extreme heat, and while the worst may be behind us, our trees and plants are still feeling the effects. Prolonged high temperatures put stress on landscapes that can linger for weeks, and can even lead to problems down the road. Now is the perfect time to give your trees some extra TLC (or “Tree-LC!”) so they can bounce back and remain healthy for years to come.

What Heat Stress Looks Like

Trees respond to heat in different ways, and some signs are easier to spot than others:

  • Wilting leaves: A telltale sign your tree is struggling to move enough water to its foliage.

  • Scorched or brown leaves: The edges or even entire leaves may appear burned.

  • Premature leaf drop: Shedding leaves helps the tree conserve moisture, but if your August yard looks like fall has arrived too early, your trees may be showing signs of heat stress.

  • Delayed damage: Some issues, like branch dieback, may not show up until months after the heat wave.
