Kent, Ohio – Native Shorelines, a division of Davey Resource Group, which is a subsidiary of The Davey Tree Expert Company, announced a patent pending enhancement, QuickReef® Carbon+™, to its proprietary QuickReef® living shoreline system.
QuickReef® Carbon+™ brings together both the already-patented living shoreline system QuickReef®, developed by Native Shorelines in 2021, and Davey-produced biochar, into one product. Embedding the biochar into the living shoreline infrastructure provides a durable, long-term home for the carbon while building on the shoreline stabilization and ecological benefits of the QuickReef® system.
QuickReef® is made primarily from natural, native calcium carbonate materials, including recycled oyster shell and marl. Designed to stabilize shorelines while supporting ecological function, QuickReef® is used in marine and freshwater environments by residential property owners, engineering firms and local, state and federal agencies to reduce erosion and support habitat restoration.
Davey’s biochar is produced from wood chips generated through Davey operations to improve the health, safety, and appearance of trees. Biochar is a carbon-rich material created through a controlled process that permanently sequesters carbon. Davey currently operates a biochar production facility in Chicago.
In addition to carbon sequestration, biochar is known for its ability to absorb certain nutrients and contaminants in water. The Davey Institute is advancing applied research to further document and quantify the water quality benefits associated with biochar incorporated into QuickReef® Carbon+™ units, including nutrient and PFAS adsorption in surrounding waters.
“QuickReef® Carbon+™ represents the natural evolution of two solutions we have been advancing independently,” said Worth Creech, Director of Operations for Native Shorelines and inventor of the QuickReef® system. “By integrating biochar into the reef units, we are creating a permanent end use for sequestered carbon while expanding the performance potential of living shorelines.”
QuickReef® Carbon+™ is patent pending and will be available as part of the QuickReef® product line.
