In this Cheatham County Exchange article, Lukas Suzano from Davey's Nashville office talks about how you can help your trees recover from outstanding heat.
Middle Tennessee just endured a brutal stretch of hot summer weather known as the “heat dome.” As the thermometer sat stubbornly in the mid-to-upper 90s and humidity soared for weeks on end, our trees had to tough it out. The stress of the prolonged high temperatures took a toll on many trees, and now is the right time to help them recover.
During extreme heat conditions like the recent heat dome, you may have noticed your trees’ leaves appearing limp, drooping or curled. When high heat hits, the edges of the leaves on your trees can turn brown and crispy, as if scorched. Some trees may even drop their leaves or go into a summer dormancy.
These are considered short term symptoms of heat stress, and if addressed quickly with the steps described below, many trees will fully recover.
More serious symptoms of heat stress are sometimes harder to see by the untrained eye. During extended periods of extreme heat, trees may experience diminished photosynthesis, slower growth, and lower resistance to pests and diseases.
