A large, white building in the background and behind a pond and bridge.Davey Tree, the national tree-management and environmental services company in Kent, is putting the finishing touches on its Seed Campus, a 200-acre development across the street from its headquarters. 

The campus is dedicated to training employees on how to care for landscapes, golf courses, wetlands, pollinators and, yes, trees. It's a development representing tens of millions of dollars in investment that would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the company to do if it were starting today, according to Davey CEO Pat Covey. 

"We got very fortunate - and then it happened to be across the street," said Covey, pointing out the dramatic increase in both the price and scarcity of available land as well as escalating construction costs. 

And, since much of the work overlapped with Davey's area of expertise, the company didn't have to sink money into hiring outside contractors, Covey said.
