In this Frederick News-Post article, Lou Meyer from Davey's Mid-Atlantic region talks about how beech leaf disease can harm healthy trees.
Beech trees across the state are seeing worsening symptoms of the fast-spreading complex beech leaf disease, according to the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
The disease affects all beech species, including American beech, which is native to eastern North America and provides habitat and food sources for many animals.
First detected in Ohio in 2012, symptoms of the disease were seen in Frederick County in August 2023. The disease was confirmed in Maryland by the state Department of Agriculture in September 2023.
It has since been found in other counties across the state, including Montgomery, Carroll and Washington. It has also been detected in several surrounding states, reaching up to Maine and west to Michigan.
