Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District
DRG has supported the long-term function of Maplewood Mall’s stormwater infrastructure through a multi-year maintenance program that includes inspections, vegetation management, and erosion control.
Solving Stormwater Challenges With Best Management Practices
The Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District (RWMWD) partnered with Maplewood Mall in St. Paul, MN to implement an effective stormwater Best Management Practice (BMP) design aimed at reducing the amount of impervious surface on the site. They installed eight regionally sized rain gardens, 25 residentially sized rain gardens, 82 parking lot islands, 5 entrance planting beds, and 225 trees. The trees were planted throughout the rain gardens and planting beds, as well as in specially designed parking lot tree trenches modeled after a Swedish design.
Staying On Track For Success
To ensure the long-term success of the project, the RWMWD partnered with Davey Resource Group (DRG) to provide ongoing BMP maintenance support at Maplewood Mall. Services include BMP inspections, trash and sediment removal, vegetation management, invasive species control, erosion repair, tree trimming, mulch replenishment, and plant replacement.
DRG’s maintenance program helps ensure the system continues to perform as designed, supporting the mall’s water quality goals and sustaining community investment in green infrastructure.
