Heroes of the Summer

Congratulations to the Buffalo, NY office on being awarded the PR Team of the Summer! This accolade was earned by demonstrating a desire for more attention for their office, showing a proactive stance towards media engagement.

In July, the team reached out to corporate communications project manager Jill Golden, and together they brainstormed story ideas. These ideas were then pitched to local news outlets throughout the summer in a timely manner. The media bit and interviewed Buffalo's district manager Tom Anderson and sales arborist Ed Boyczuk, for four feature stories reaching a total of 411K eyeballs.

This series of engagements not only underscored the expertise within the Buffalo office but also showcased the proactive minds of the team. Great job, team!

  • July 1: Tom shared summer tree care tips with Spectrum News 1 viewers.
  • July 30: Tom was interviewed about the impacts of the Canadian wildfires on vegetation on Spectrum News 1 reaching 202K.
  • September 19: Another interview on Spectrum News 1 was conducted to share information about the invasive box tree moth. This reached 199K.
  • September 21: Ed helped review an article for the Springville Journal to share what impacts fall leaves and color reaching 10K.
Joanna Parker

PR Hero: Client Experience Coordinator Channels Media Opportunity!

Joanna Parker, client experience coordinator for the Youngstown office, deserves special recognition this quarter after jumping into action after she received an unexpected call to her office.

After a storm, a news station reached out to the Youngstown office for a story on why healthy, city trees were toppling over, crushing cars and houses and injuring pedestrians. That’s certainly not a fun story, and not one Davey wants an expert featured in.

So, instead of handling it as a routine task or letting it slide, she used her media card to direct the reporter to Davey’s media number (800) 447-1667 ext. 1107 (or media@davey.com). The news station called the extension where Davey's PR team politely turned the story down and directed them to alternative sources. Her prompt and intuitive action allowed the PR team to avoid engaging in a topic we don’t want to, but also still make a connection with the reporter for future stories.

If a news station contacts your office, the request should always be directed to the PR team who can determine how best to proceed.

Parker is an amazing example of why the PR team has media cards. Media cards provide relevant contact information and messaging on how to properly handle requests from news stations.
