In this Southern Living article, Alec Hall from Davey's St. Louis West office says how retaining tree logs can support soil health, wildlife and garden ecosystems.

A tree may fall after a huge storm or become unstable and need to be removed because it’s no longer safe on your property. A tree removal service will take care of removing the tree but before you have them haul it away, consider having the trunk cut into smaller logs to be used in your garden. Tree logs can be used in a myriad of ways, such as a border for a garden bed, as edging, or even a place to sit.

When contacting a tree removal service, make sure to let them know your goals so they can plan accordingly. “If a homeowner wants to keep some of the wood, most arborists are equipped to process portions of the trunk or larger limbs into manageable logs or rounds rather than hauling everything away,” says Alec Hall, ISA Certified Arborist with Davey Tree. “It is something I would recommend discussing with the arborist before the work begins, because the size and placement of those pieces can be planned as part of the removal.”
