The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers defines EwN as the intentional alignment of natural and engineering processes to deliver economic, ecological and social benefits. One forward-thinking aggregates producer in a rapidly expanding watershed has put these principles into practice through a comprehensive stream relocation and restoration project. By choosing the least environmentally impactful path for pit expansion, the producer not only secured decades of additional reserves but also breathed new life into a severely degraded waterway, proving that sustainable mining and ecological restoration can go hand in hand.

Like many aggregates facilities across the country, this producer faced a familiar challenge in today’s growing regions: surging demand for high-quality aggregates required expansion of the active pit and operations. Committed to sustainable operations, leadership engaged Davey Resource Group’s (DRG) environmental consulting team early in the planning process. The objective was straightforward yet ambitious, to identify alternatives that would minimize impacts to aquatic resources while supporting long-term operation viability. On-site evaluations quickly highlighted the complexity of the site.
