MIDLAND, Mich. (WJRT) - An AI-based program is being used to monitor tree health in Midland.
"Smart tree inventory gives us more effective management," said Abbey Claerhout.
Claerhout is the park manager who oversees Midland's forests. She's led the implementation of a new citywide system to make the process of forestry cataloguing easier.
The project partners with Davey Resource Group to deploy a fleet of specialized vehicles with 360 LiDAR cameras. The cameras scan and create models of the area's trees.
Those scans are then ran through an analysis software called "Tree Keeper" which uses AI to identify urban tree health, species and age. All of which is fact-checked by arborists before being sent back to the Midland officials.
