In Tacoma, some of the most common tree pests and diseases include Lace Bugs, Bronze Birch Borer, and Emerald Ash Borer. Here are signs and symptoms of how these pests and diseases can affect your trees.

  • Lace Bugs: Leaves with a bleached appearance, early leaf drop, and black, shiny lace bug excrement on the undersides of leaves. Unlike spider mites, lace bugs do not produce silky webbing.
  • Bronze Birch Borer: Discolored and thinning leaves in the upper canopy of the birch tree, dead branches at the top, and swollen ridges along the trunk and branches.
  • Emerald Ash Borer: Attacked trees show canopy thinning, branch dieback, and bark splitting, starting in the upper canopy and progressing downward over several years.

A Plant Health Care (PHC) Program is a proactive, year-round plan to keep your trees and shrubs healthy and pest-free. Our certified arborists focus on prevention and early detection by monitoring soil health, nutrients, insects, and disease. Based on your property’s needs, we create a customized care plan that may include fertilization, pest management, pruning, and soil improvement.

Some tree species, like birch, sycamore, silver maple, and redbud trees, naturally shed bark as they grow, while other species shed bark as a sign of disease, pests, or extreme temperature damage. If your tree has healthy-looking bark under the shed, then it’s usually safe. Read our blog to learn more about bark shedding.

Tacoma’s frequent rainfall and extended wet seasons can create saturated soil conditions that limit oxygen flow to roots. Over time, excessive moisture may contribute to root rot, fungal growth, or structural instability. Proper drainage assessment and routine inspections help prevent long-term damage in waterlogged soils. Read our blog to learn how to fix oversaturated soil.

Evergreens in Tacoma like Doug fir don’t require as much proactive pruning. We try not to prune them if possible actually. The wind sailing justification is antiquated and they don’t do that. When they prune big evergreens it’s to address a structural issue, remove deadwood, or to reduce the possibility of branch failures impacting targets.

Poor drainage can lead to saturated soils and oxygen-deprived roots. Properties built on glacial or clay-heavy soils may require soil conditioning or grading adjustments to support healthy root systems. Read our blog to learn more about proper drainage to avoid oversaturated soils.
