Talquin Electric Cooperative

Davey crews mobilized quickly to help Talquin Electric clear hazard trees from lines after Hurricane Michael hit the Florida Panhandle, avoiding additional outages during a time of recovery.

The Challenge

When Hurricane Michael made landfall in the Florida Panhandle October 2018, debris caused a vast amount of damage to the area. This included damage to a high number of trees in the right of way, threatening outages even after Talquin Electric Cooperative completed their emergency power restoration efforts.

Talquin began seeking a partner who could mobilize crews quickly and efficiently to address approximately 4,600 hazard trees and limb hangers left after the hurricane. With the equipment and resources available to assist, Davey secured the contract for the special project in December 2018 and began to prepare immediately.

The Solution

Because the project required special funding, the utility implemented a strict deadline of April 6 for the hazard tree removals. Davey brought in a number of crews from different service lines and other utility contracts to ensure the deadline was met and the work was completed within budget. Between December 2018 and when the project began in January 2019, Davey also trained new crews, including mandatory safety on-boarding, and arranged logistics and accommodations.

Around 35 crews began work in January with bucket trucks and chippers to clear the hazard trees. In order to meet the tight deadline while staying on budget, crews put in 10 hours per day 6 days a week. The majority of the work was performed on distribution right-of-ways.

The Results

Talquin Electric was pleased with Davey’s efficiency and safety. The utility praised Davey crews for being professional and helping them ensure the Florida Panhandle was safe from any additional outages during a difficult time of recovery.
