Community Center Landscaping & Stormwater BMP
Davey Resource Group mixed aesthetics and function by installing a specialized tree trench system to address stormwater management and encourage public use of the space at the entrance to Maplewood Community Center.
Davey Resource Group (DRG) performed the design and installation of a new front entry for the Maplewood Community Center/YMCA in 2019. Plans are inclusive of an ADA ramp, poured concrete steps, outdoor gathering space, retaining wall alteration, Silva Cell tree trench installation, and native plantings.
The new front entrance was designed to address existing deteriorating retaining wall systems, increase responsible stormwater management on site, and encourage public use of the space. The design features a Silva Cell tree trench system, a small seating area, revised retaining wall structures, poured concrete raised planters, and new ADA compliant entrance ramp.
Silva Cells are modular building blocks stacked beneath the soil to enhance soil volume which increases infiltration, improves runoff control, and allows trees to grow larger than those planted in traditional urban conditions. Because they are underground, they often go unnoticed.
