i-Tree, a cooperative initiative between The Davey Tree Expert Company, the USDA Forest Service, Arbor Day Foundation®, Society of Municipal Arborists, International Society of Arboriculture® and Casey Trees®, analyzes urban forests to assess the benefits trees provide. The USDA Forest Service and Davey provide this state-of-the-art, peer-reviewed software suite to help communities improve the management of their urban forests and strengthen their advocacy efforts.

Since i-Tree Tools was initially released in August 2006, the software has helped countless communities, non-profit organizations, consultants, volunteers and students quantify the value and structure of trees within neighborhoods, cities and states. i-Tree helps people understand the beneficial ecological services trees provide, which links urban forestry management with the quality of the environment and the community.

The Benefits Of Trees

More than beauty and shade, trees work hard for us all. i-Tree helps people explore how trees improve the environment in communities big and small, urban and rural…even in their own backyard! As an example, growing over 20 years in Kent, Ohio, USA, one red maple can:

  • Remove 3,100 pounds of Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere.
  • Reduce the emissions of 5,500 pounds of Carbon Dioxide and 30 pounds of air pollution from a power plant.
  • Save 570 kWh of electricity and 20 MMBtu of fueling for cooling and heating.
  • Intercept 27,000 gallons of rainfall and avoid 4,800 gallons of runoff.
  • Filter 15 pounds of Ozone, Nitrogen Dioxide, and Sulfur Dioxide from the air we breathe.
