National Grid, Public Service Enterprise Group Long Island, Jersey Central Power & Light

After high winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Isaias caused severe damage to several areas along the East Coast, Davey assembled a team to clear debris and make way for line repair crews to restore power.

The Challenge

Hurricane Isaias was a Category 1 hurricane that ripped through the Caribbean and up the East Coast of the United States from late July to early August 2020. Destructive, strong winds and heavy rain uprooted trees and damaged utility poles, causing power outages.
For three Davey Tree clients—National Grid, Public Service Enterprise Group Long Island, and Jersey Central Power & Light—Hurricane Isaias’s damage caused around 2 million customers in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey to lose power.

The Solution

Davey’s Eastern Utility division mobilized local teams and called on crews from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee to help clear storm debris. Two hundred and three line clearance crews, comprised of over 500 Davey employees, worked across the service areas.

Tree clearing after a storm can be a high-risk challenge. Operations management were in constant communication, sharing close calls, near misses, updated crew counts, and changed plans to help the Davey line clearance crews perform their work safely and efficiently.

The Results

After working around the clock for approximately two weeks, the storm debris was all cleared and line crews were able to finally finish restoring power. Thanks to Davey’s national footprint and ability to bring in resources from other areas of the country, the utilities' customers in the New England area had reliable electric service and could return to normal life.
