COLUMBUS, OH – Keep Ohio Beautiful hosted its annual Great Ohio Planting Day on Friday, April 27, at the East Fork State Park’s campground in Bethel. Both native hardwoods and white pines were planted around the campground and main beach, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
Keep Ohio Beautiful (KOB) and ODNR worked together along with 51 volunteers to beautify and enhance the campground at East Fork State Park by planting 68 new trees in honor of Arbor Day.
Two local schools participated, including 17 students from St. Michael’s School in Ripley and six students from Great Oaks Vocational School. Other volunteer groups included Turner Construction Company and Clermont County Soil and Water Conservation District, as well as area residents.
Funding for the project was awarded to KOB through the UPS Foundation. Local sponsors of this year’s event included Davey Resource Group, Clermont County Convention and Visitors Bureau, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. T-shirts for participants were provided by Davey Resources Group and lunch was provided by Penn Station.
“Davey Resource Group is pleased to be involved in such a worthwhile event. This partnership results in trees being planted at East Fork State Park,” said Karen Wise, KOB board president and Davey Resource Group division manager. “Planting nearly 70 trees is a critical first step to replacing the park’s trees lost to the emerald ash borer and Asian longhorned beetle.”
Each year, KOB celebrates Great Ohio Planting Day, a hands-on educational program, which demonstrates how to properly prepare a planting site, plant and care for a tree.
As a state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, KOB serves as Ohio’s umbrella organization for more than 32 local affiliate organizations in numerous Ohio communities. By providing a strong support system and the sharing of best practices, KOB enables volunteers in communities throughout Ohio to improve waste handling practices, litter prevention, recycling, beautification and community greening efforts.
