A dead tree doesn't start to fall apart for a while, sometimes years, but a dead palm tree can be particularly dangerous because they have internal decay sooner rather than later. Those are a top priority for removal if there is no new green growth at the top, said Heath Gober, a certified tree specialist with Davey Tree South Austin.
"Everybody is asking, 'Is my tree going to make it?'" Gober said. "Some of these trees can be saved, but others could be on a severe decline spiral for years."
Gober said that in some cases, especially when a tree is in a place not accessible by a bucket truck, he has to turn down customers who want to have a palm tree removed because the situation is too dangerous, even for professionals.
"It makes for difficult conversations," he said, but with widespread palm loss across the state, "someone from Texas is going to get killed removing a palm tree."
