Midwestern U.S. Based Utility

Just-in-time Environmental Permitting Keeps Large Pipeline Project on Track.

The Challenge

A Midwestern U.S. based utility’s 18-mile high pressure natural gas pipeline in Indiana would supply customers with reliable energy and reduce capacity issues. The pipeline route had been selected, easements had been secured, and a construction date was established, but no environmental field surveys or permit pre-coordination had taken place. In order to meet deadlines, the utility needed comprehensive environmental planning that was both professional and prompt.

The Solution

Davey Resource Group field teams went into action:

  • Surveyed the 18-mile project corridor for the presence of wetlands, streams, and potential endangered and threatened species habitat.
  • Conducted a GIS analysis to determine impacts to forested floodway.
  • Worked closely with the utility to quantify impacts to natural resources, and agency coordination was initiated.
  • Located potential mitigation sites and developed mitigation plans.
  • Coordinated with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and a bat emergence survey was conducted to confirm absence of endangered and threatened bat species.

The Results

DRG obtained the necessary permits* and the natural gas pipeline construction proceeded on schedule. DRG’s experts are implementing the mitigation plans and will continue to help the utility satisfy permit requirements on an ongoing basis.
