Filling a cavity in an otherwise healthy tree may help improve appearance, promote wound closure and prevent water and animals from entering the hollow. While it will not cure decay, proper cavity treatment (in combination with regular pruning, feeding and insect/disease control) may help improve a tree's defenses.
The tree surgeon must use extreme caution to not wound the live tissue while excising the decay from the tree as injury will compromise the compartmentalization of the wound.
