The Village of East Hampton, N.Y., has relied on Davey Resource Group (DRG) to help manage an important natural resource within their Village—their urban forest. To help the Village better keep track of trees located with public rights-of-way and public spaces, DRG developed an electronic "tree layer" for the Village's geographic information system (GIS). The Village also purchased DRG's TreeKeeper® 7.6 Online Version tree management software. This is DRG's own tree management software developed specifically for municipalities to manage their street tree populations. East Hampton chose to utilize the online version of TreeKeeper, whereby they log onto their own specific website on the Internet to access the software. DRG hosts that website and maintains the database on behalf of the Village and provides complimentary upgrades to the software as they become available.
Additionally, TreeKeeper 7.6 provides East Hampton with a GIS capability where a village street map is displayed on the computer with all of the tree locations indicated by map points. With this software, East Hampton is able to plan for work, record citizen calls about tree problems, generate work orders for crews to perform tree maintenance activities, record all completed work, and print detailed reports on the Village trees and work completed.
