Yankee Creek is a 50-acre consolidated wetlands mitigation project located in the Mahoning River watershed. The project spans portions of Fowler and Hartford townships, Trumbull County, Ohio, and includes two distinct restoration areas referred to as “North” and “South”.
The Yankee Creek site provides wetlands and stream restoration, enhancement, and preservation and is being used by several entities for compensatory mitigation for wetland and stream impacts. This project was reviewed and approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District.
The project site and several hundred more acres of the Yankee Creek riparian area are owned by the Matthews family. Ohio Wetlands Foundation identified the property’s potential and worked with Davey Resource Group to create a successful mitigation project that would satisfy the Matthews family’s vision for their land. Portions of the property are being enrolled in the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s Wetland Reserve Program, while prior croplands are being restored back to their pre-European settlement conditions for wetlands mitigation.
Both North and South sections of the mitigation project have restored wetlands within former agricultural fields. Wetland communities have been created through the installation of low berms, shallow excavation, and multiple native plantings. Water levels will range from seasonally saturated to shallow standing water for portions of the year.
