Like many others in the company, Davey was Ben’s first full-time job. Referred to Davey by a friend and hired by Larry Evans as a groundman, Johnson’s work ethic and willingness to learn have made him a key contributor to Davey’s success.

An accomplished basketball player, Ben makes the analogy between Davey and team sports. "We need to work as a team to be successful. We work hard, but take care of each other, and everyone plays an important role. In almost any job, you spend more time with your co-workers than family, so it’s important to work well together."
Ben values the training opportunities offered at Davey, such as the Davey Institute of Tree Sciences (DITS), a concentrated month-long training experience, one that "you’ll remember for the rest of your life." These type of programs provide both advanced training and the chance to understand the scope of Davey operations and view opportunities throughout North America.

Never one to back down from a challenge, Johnson enjoys the intense conditions in which he often works. This might include trimming a massive redwood or managing a 100-foot boom operation in extreme heat, strong wind or rain. Being one of the first responders after a storm and helping to restore power is also an experience that Ben finds gratifying. "Seeing the thankful expressions on the faces of those that you are helping is something that stays with you."
