Davey Resource Group (DRG) surveyed poles for National Grid in New York as part of an audit of joint use records and pole rental fees.
From spring 2003 to winter 2003/2004, a DRG team of about a dozen worked 10-hour days in heat and frigid temperatures surveying the Eastern Division of National Grid’s New York service territory, which includes about 250,000 poles across 197 municipalities. The final audit reports were delivered in February 2004 in Microsoft Access format.
National Grid provided existing GIS data to DRG. We then used Fujitsu pen-based computers with ROWKeeper Data Collection software to update the information in the field.
The DRG team collected and verified data that included: pole numbers; foreign companies, such as other utilities attached to the poles; numbers and types of attachments; and power supply information.
DRG also updated the GIS information with newly located poles, noted poles that were not found, and corrected mislocated poles. DRG project leaders built an excellent quality control model that was key to high accuracy and project success.
