What is GIS? |

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a combination of computer hardware, software, data, and personnel used to interactively manage, analyze, and display geographic data. More than just a means of generating static paper maps, a GIS is a dynamic, map-oriented database system with geographic objects linked to tabular records. As a spatial decision support system, GIS can assist all levels of planning and management.
With a GIS, data become map-enabled, providing unique visualization and analysis opportunities. It allows one to query their data and instantly map the results, revealing patterns not apparent within an ordinary table. Each database becomes a map layer to be analyzed in conjunction with other map layers.
