Recently Davey Large Tree Moving had the unique opportunity to recreate history. Such was the case when Davey's experts were called in to help restore one of the game of golf's great treasures, a Donald Ross’ championship golf course design.
The links-type course was designed by the famed architect in 1920, and is part of the French Lick Springs Resort & Casino in French Lick, Indiana. The site of the 1924 PGA Championship required special care.
The original design called for the increasingly rare eastern red cedar. Davey's crews located and moved 114 eastern red cedars via a Davey pod truck, a tractor trailer with 18 pods and a bobcat outfitted with a tree spade.
The end result was success, including the restoration of the course's original design. More importantly, Davey's understanding of the golf course environment and use of specialized equipment helped protect the course, where traditional large equipment might have compromised the integrity of the landscape.
