The Trumbull Creek Wetlands Mitigation Bank Phase 2 site is bisected by Ohio 166 (Rock Creek Road) and is east of Sidley Road and west of Dawsey Road. Trumbull Creek flows eastward along the southern property line, eventually entering the Grand River. Phase 2 comprises 113 acres north of Ohio 166 and 178 acres south of Ohio 166. The mitigation plan for Phase 2 calls for the restoration of approximately 150 acres of wetland/upland complexes.
Approximately 60 percent of this area will be forested, with no more than 30 percent comprised of upland areas. Extensive earthwork was done on the property in an attempt to replicate the natural hummock-swale topography exhibited by natural wetlands in the area. The earthwork was completed in November 2005. A total of 90,000+ bare root tree and shrub seedlings were installed in Spring 2006 along with other plant material such as balled and burlapped trees.
Plans for this mitigation bank were develped based on new guidance and monitoring standards from Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Ohio Wetlands Foundation and Davey Resource Group worked together to develop an exciting new wetlands mitigation and monitoring plan that is acceptable to the Mitigation Bank Review Team (MBRT). The Phase 2 plan includes large-scale woody vegetation plantings, an aggressive invasive plant control regimen, and the use of complex quantitative vegetation monitoring techniques (Ohio EPA’s Vegetation Index of Biotic Integrity) over a 10-year period.
