In December 2004, Davey Resource Group was contracted to conduct a comprehensive inventory of the University of Mississippi’s 4,212 campus trees and stumps. The goal was to provide complete tree data to allow campus grounds personnel to manage the existing tree stock in a more efficient manner. The inventory located and mapped all trees and stumps using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Per the client’s request, the tree data were delivered in ArcView™ shapefile format along with an Excel™ spreadsheet of the entire tree database. Detailed Geographic Information System (GIS) maps were also created and delivered to the University. These maps showed all tree and stump locations on aerial photos of the campus for ease of identification in the field, as well as maintenance recommendations, species, and tree condition.
The University of Mississippi, Ole Miss as students and alumni affectionately refer to it, has a long, rich history of being an aesthetically pleasing campus with well-planned and cared for landscaping. Today, the University’s main concern is its expansion. Construction of new and renovation of old buildings is progressing at a rapid pace. Many older established areas with landmark trees will soon be impacted and tree preservation has become important to campus grounds planning staff. Davey Resource Group’s tree inventory data have helped the University with construction project planning. All landmark trees are now located and recorded. This will help planners greatly in locating and preserving the University’s historic trees.
