Schedel Arboretum and Gardens, Elmore, Ohio: Arboretum Tree Inventory, Management Plan, and Asset Manager Software

In April, 2005, Davey Resource Group was contracted to conduct a comprehensive inventory of Schedel Arboretum and Gardens’ 734 trees and shrubs and 43 flowerbed shapes and locations. The goal was to provide complete tree and shrub data to allow grounds personnel to manage the existing tree and shrub stock in a more efficient manner. The inventory located and mapped all trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Per the client’s request, the tree, shrub, and flowerbed data were incorporated in Davey Resource Group’s proprietary Asset Manager software. The Asset Manager software depicts all tree, shrub, and flowerbed locations on a recent aerial photo of the Arboretum for ease of identification in the field. All data recorded during the initial inventory process are also included in the software, such as sizes, areas, species, conditions, and maintenance recommendations.

Since 1963, the Schedel Arboretum and Gardens Foundation has protected and preserved the Arboretum and Gardens for the enjoyment of present and future generations. Each year, more than 15,000 annuals are transplanted from the greenhouse to the grounds. These plantings, along with the many perennials, flowering trees, and shrubs, provide outstanding color from early spring to late fall. The grounds serve as an ideal location for a variety of social activities. These range from formal functions, such as weddings, receptions, workshops, dinners, concerts, and church services, to family picnics and informal business retreats by the lakes.
