In addition to collecting field data, Davey Resource Group (DRG) produces maps to help our clients use the information. FirstEnergy's vegetation management operation in northern Ohio is using maps provided by DRG in both hard copy and electronic formats.
With a global positioning system (GPS) survey database of more than 40,000 structures, FirstEnergy distributes maps to the vegetation management staff and contractors in comprehensive PDFs and hard copies. Since most people are familiar with county road maps, we combined the GPS survey database with commercially available maps that include street names, municipal boundaries, parks, railroads, bodies of water, and landmarks. Using attributes from the GPS survey, a right-of-way buffer was constructed along each transmission corridor.
Each transmission structure is labeled with a unique identification number. Each corridor is labeled and includes substations, power plants, and aerial check points. Each map provides a system-wide key map showing the location of the individual corridor.
