Guernsey-Muskingum Electric Cooperative has called upon Davey Resource Group (DRG) to complete a multi-faceted inventory along nearly 3,000 miles of electric lines and create a database and software to help oversee its system.
In 2002, DRG performed a joint-use inventory of more than 40,000 poles in Guernsey-Muskingum’s seven districts throughout rural Southeast Ohio, located in the Allegheny Plateau of the Appalachian Mountains. The work often was completed on foot.
In 2003, we began assisting with reading the 16,000 meters throughout the system. The cooperative depends upon its customers to read their own meters because it minimizes payroll and transportation costs. Due to this honor system, it is often necessary to confirm or clarify the information submitted or to inspect the equipment for potentially faulty outputs.
In addition, our field personnel began a ‘one set of footprints’ approach along the right-of-way with multiple items being noted about the electric distribution system at a time. This provides the cooperative the most up-to-date information about its circuits, including pole and equipment assessments, herbicide applications, underground cabinet inspections, and hazard vegetation determinations.
With these records, a database was created and software is being developed to help Guernsey-Muskingum better manage its system.
