Granville, Ohio:
Endangered Species Surveys – Indiana Bat, Massasauga Rattlesnake, and Carolina Willow

The Owens-Corning Science and Technology Center, located in Granville, Ohio, supports approximately 0.64 square kilometers of forested land in addition to developed lands and other natural areas. The property, in its history, has been subject to hazardous industrial contamination. As part of an industrial remediation project, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency required an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) of the property.

As a part of the EIS, Davey Resource Group scientists were brought in to survey three species of concern known to range over the area: the federally endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis), candidate for federal listing massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus), and the state potentially threatened Carolina willow (Salix caroliniana). Potential habitat for each of these species exists within the corporate campus. The purpose of the surveys was to confirm the absence or presence of these listed species and, further, to ensure no rare, threatened, or endangered species or their critical habitats were negatively impacted by the past contamination.

Survey procedures for the Indiana bat and eastern massasauga rattlesnake strictly followed guidelines issued by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Procedures for the survey of Carolina willow followed guidelines recommended by Davey Resource Group foresters and botanists. No rare, threatened, or endangered species were found to be using the Owens-Corning Science and Technology Center property.
