American Transmission Systems, Inc. (ATSI) and Ohio Edison (subsidiaries of FirstEnergy) propose to construct a 12.5-mile 138-kV transmission line in Northeast Ohio. The new line will parallel the existing Cleveland Electric Illuminating Hanna-Jupiter 345 kV transmission line. Davey Resource Group conducted a survey for trees that might potentially support breeding colonies of the federally and state endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis). All trees with suitable characteristics were marked in the field with flagging tape and located using a Trimble ProXR Global Positioning System (GPS) (12-Channel) and illustrated on base maps of the site.
The Indiana bat was first listed in 1967 and presently ranges over large portions of the eastern United States. During the summer months, females of this species form large maternity colonies under the loose bark of trees.
