Davey Resource Group (DRG) has been providing Conectiv, now part of Pepco Holdings, Inc., with up to eight professional work planners since 1998 to assist with the utility�s line clearance work planning and notification process.
The DRG work planners have developed a complete system for the notification process, including a preplanning workload analysis stage, the development of accurate electronic maps for vegetation management crews, and the electronic storage of information on vegetation conditions.
The notification process begins with work planners driving the line, leaving notification information for residents, contacting landowners for the necessary signed permissions for tree removal, and physically marking trees for upcoming removal. During this stage, DRG work planners carry pen-based computers loaded with base maps from the utility�s geographic information system (GIS).
The work planners then use the GIS base maps and add symbols to indicate the various types and amounts of needed work. Maps are created from the collected information that provides detailed and easy-to-read work packages for the vegetation management crews. At the end of the process, the electronic maps are saved as a record of vegetation conditions for future reference.
