For a utility provider such as Pacific Gas and Electric, system reliability is measured by the frequency, duration and impact of outages. To reduce outages in high impact areas, PG&E contracted with Davey to mount a Reliability Project, referred to as "Safety to the Sky" by the Davey team involved. Crew foremen enrolled in an Advanced Arborist Training Program to learn new rigging, roping and usage techniques of special equipment, which included three 100-foot boom trucks, thousands of feet of rope, extra chain saws and lowering devices. PG&E identified for removal the tree species and locations that have been most responsible for service interruption. For example, redwoods tower hundreds of feet over the lines. It was necessary to determine which branches could come down on a line and needed eradicated. The large size of the trees, coupled with the traffic control issues on narrow roads, made for challenging working conditions. To date, much of the project has been completed - with no reportable injuries. Attention by Davey safety personnel has ensured crews and equipment are prepared for the job.
