Diagnostician and research associate Deborah Miller has a passion for tree care and a flair for investigation.
"I have always loved mushrooms since I was a child wandering in the woods. As an adult I was drawn to the mystery of what made plants sick. Plant pathology combined these two loves into an exciting career."
Working in the plant laboratory at the Davey Institute during the summer months is like working in a hospital emergency room. Samples of sick plants pour into the lab and Miller must quickly assess the symptoms, identify insects, culture for plant pathogens and diagnose the problems.
Sadly, on one day Miller may have to recommend the removal of a 200-year-old oak. Other days are more satisfying because the problem can be successfully treated.
Miller has such a passion for trees that she volunteers as shade tree commissioner in her community. As such, she advises the city arborist on selection and care of trees, and conducts educational programs for the public.
