Autumn and early winter are the best time to think about doing heavy pruning of your garden trees, especially pine trees.
That's the advice of Fernando Daniels, who has owned Febronio Tree Service in Marin for 11 years.
"We prune trees year-round, but now, when it's colder and the sap flow is slower, trees heal better and faster," he explains. "And it's best for pine trees because there's a better chance that beetles won't affect the trees."
Also, this is the best time to avoid disturbing the nests that will be occupied in birds and small animals in spring and summer.
Steve Nagy, a spokesman for Davey Tree Expert Co., a national company that services Marin, agrees that this is prime time for tree pruning and has come up with a list of autumn tree-pruning and safety tips for Marin home gardeners.
